Want to know what your home is worth? Just ask.

History & Neighborhood

Deerwood was Florida's first gated community, developed starting in 1961 by Bryant Skinner, whose family once owned nearly 40,000 acres across Northeast Florida. Skinner hired golf architect George Cobb to design the course, then built the first home in the new development himself. The Skinner family also donated land that became Southside Boulevard and Butler Boulevard (SR-202), opening up what's now one of Jacksonville's busiest commercial corridors.

The club has real history behind it: the Greater Jacksonville Open (a forerunner to The Players Championship) in the late 1960s and early 1970s, national tennis tournaments featuring Billie Jean King, Margaret Court, Arthur Ashe, and Jimmy Connors, and a 1975 meeting between President Gerald Ford and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat.

Today Deerwood totals roughly 900 homes across 16 miles of streets and 45 lakes, with lots ranging from under an acre to 20 acres. Most homes were built between 1970 and 1999, though newer construction and custom rebuilds continue, particularly in The Estates section on the community's east side. The golf course itself is entering another chapter: a renovation led by course designer Erik Larsen begins in 2026, with completion expected in fall 2027.

Amenities & HOA

Deerwood Country Club amenities include:

  • Par-72 golf course with six tee sets and full practice facilities
  • 12 Har-Tru tennis courts, most lit for night play
  • Olympic-size pool, splash pool, jacuzzi, and steam room
  • Fitness center overlooking Lake Deerwood, with classes and personal training
  • Full-service clubhouse dining and private event spaces
  • Guarded, gated entry

Every home in Deerwood belongs to the Deerwood Improvement Association (DIA), the mandatory HOA that maintains roads, entrances, common areas, and Deerwood's 45 lakes.

Deerwood Country Club itself is member-owned and separate from the HOA. Membership comes in two types: Equity members, who have voting rights and can serve on the club's Board of Governors, and Associate members. Current membership categories and investment are available directly from Deerwood Country Club.

Schools

Deerwood is zoned for Duval County Public Schools: Twin Lakes Elementary, Twin Lakes Academy Middle School, and Atlantic Coast High School. Jacksonville Country Day School, a private option, sits at the community's southwest corner and has its own private drop-off entrance from inside the gates.
