Deerwood Country Club Neighborhood
The Deerwood Country Club was developed in the 1960's and was a product of the Skinner family, a family who owned a large amount of land in Florida. The Skinner brothers developed the golf course using notable golf architect, George Cobb, in 1960-1961. Within a couple years, both Skinner brothers built houses within what would become the gated country club community of Deerwood Country Club. The Skinner family donated land and convinced the Jacksonville Expressway Authority to build a road to connect Beach Blvd to Philips Hwy, which became what we call Southside Blvd. The family also donated land for JTB to be built. Doing this connected Deerwood CC to the greater Jacksonville area at the time.
The original concept of the community was drawn out by Bryant Skinner, and he envisioned curving roadways, panoramic views, and distinctive homes on large voluminous lots with multiple open common areas incorporating lakes throughout the community. This would all be built around a country club at the center of the community that would feature golf, tennis, and the country club lifestyle.
Today the community is made up of some 900 homes on lots that range in size from less than acre to as much as 20 acres. The community features homes that have been built from all the decades since the 60's.
