History & Neighborhood
Alfred I. du Pont and his wife Jessie Ball du Pont built their estate here in the mid-1920s, choosing Christopher Point for its position at the widest stretch of the St. Johns River, ideal for yachting on their 125-foot yacht, the Nenemoosha. Local architects Marsh & Saxelbye designed the 15,000-square-foot, 25-room Mediterranean Revival mansion, and the estate was named for Mary Ball Washington's Virginia plantation, an ancestral tie to Jessie's family. The du Ponts hosted U.S. presidents, the Vanderbilts, the Carnegies, and European royalty here.
Gate Petroleum purchased the estate in 1984, restoring the mansion, gardens, and riverfront as Epping Forest Yacht & Country Club and developing the remaining acreage into today's gated community. The American Institute of Architects named the club to its "Florida Architecture: 100 Years, 100 Places" list in 2012.
Epping Forest sits on the St. Johns River just south of San Marco, with easy access to downtown Jacksonville and the river itself, one of the community's biggest draws.
