Living in a Jacksonville Loft

In a city like Jacksonville, waterfront condos are certainly more commonplace than a classic urban-style loft conversion complete with exposed brick walls, polished concrete floors, and a spiral staircase. But given Jacksonville is one of Florida’s largest cities, you’ll still find a number of super cool loft buildings scattered throughout town, which can be ideal for buyers who love an expansive living space in an old-world, urban-esque setting.

Whether you're already living in Jacksonville or thinking about a move to the area and love the idea of loft living in the Sunshine State, options and inventory won't be what you'll find in other major cities across the country. But as you'll learn below, there are a few different desirable options you'll be able to consider, but you better act fast if you see something available on the market given the limited inventory typically associated with lofts in Jacksonville.

Top Jacksonville Loft Buildings

The aptly named Home Street Lofts, located at 1050 Hendricks near Hendricks and Home Street, offer prospective home buyers the most authentic loft-style living experience in all of Jacksonville. A historic building originally constructed back in 1921, units inside Home Street Lofts have a classic big city loft look and feel, which means lots of exposed brick, ultra high ceilings, open concept floor plans, and plenty of exposed duct work and concrete as well. Additionally, 1050 Hendricks is also located right in the heart of Southbank, one of the city’s liveliest areas and ideal for loft lovers truly wanting a city living vibe.

Situated in Jacksonville’s Five Points neighborhood, 1661 Riverside definitely has more of an elegant and sophisticated ambiance than your typical industrial loft conversion, but each of the 69 contemporary lofts here are certainly as desirable as anything you’ll find in Jacksonville from a loft-style condo perspective. The building includes one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans, and you’ll love the exposed piping and duct work, track lighting, and huge open layouts that truly give units here the right “loft feel.” Flooring-wise, some lofts at 1661 Riverside feature gleaming hardwood floors throughout and others have polished concrete, so it really just depends on what upgrades and modernizations have been done to each individual unit since the building’s construction.

Pros & Cons of Living in a Jacksonville Loft

Residential lofts are a very unique property type that most buyers either love or fully understand it’s just not for them. So not surprisingly, there are plenty of pros and cons associated with buying a Jacksonville loft, or just a loft-style condo in general. First and foremost, one of the biggest advantages is the open space and high ceilings you’ll find inside most loft-style condos. Because many lofts are found inside former industrial buildings, it’s common for ceilings to be much higher than inside a traditional condo building, and the open concept layouts tend to be what attract people looking for the perfect live/work environment, which is how and why residential lofts became so popular in larger cities. Additionally, the modern and industrial design style is of course super popular right now, which is yet another advantage as far as many of today’s home buyers are concerned.

But as with most choices you’ll find on the Jacksonville real estate market, there’s always some “bad” to go along with all the “good,” and loft buyers should always be aware of potential downsides. Thanks to those ultra high ceilings, huge industrial style windows, and wide open layouts, you can expect utility bills to be slightly higher in most lofts, which is something you’ll want to keep in mind. And if you’re looking for those resort style amenities that so many condo buildings in Jacksonville and the rest of Florida tend to offer, don’t expect to get that with any of the lofts found in the Jacksonville area.
