Characteristics of a Jacksonville Mid-Century Modern Home

A mid-century modern home in Jacksonville is fairly easy to spot thanks to its unique style and architectural characteristics. Above all, mid-century modern homes are often a single-story residences with a distinct connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces—a real advantage in places like Northern Florida where home buyers come to enjoy the mild climate.

As the name suggest, the mid-century modern home style began to spread to neighborhoods and communities across the country, including to Jacksonville, back around the 1950s. Generally speaking, mid-century modern homes in Jacksonville have lots of glass, flat roof lines, and are minimalistic in design. To sum it up, mid-century modern homes are essentially a boxy shape with sharp angles that feel more modern, almost futuristic. On the inside, these homes will sometimes have changing ceiling heights, a change in flooring, half walls, or a small level change to distinguish between different rooms. Typically, though, mid-century modern homes are very open in their design and were constructed with enough space for a family to live comfortably. While there are some mid-century moderns in Jacksonville that have been around for more than a half-century, the style is still extremely popular with both buyers and new construction home builders even today.

Jacksonville Neighborhoods Where Mid-Century Modern Homes Are Common

If you’re in the market for a mid-century modern home in Jacksonville, you might have some luck finding exactly what you want in a few specific neighborhoods around town. First and foremost, mid-century modern homes are definitely commonplace in Jacksonville's Deerwood Country Club, a location that features plenty of authentic, open-concept residences behind a secure gated entrance. The Clifton neighborhood is also a pleasant residential community with a seriously diverse collection of architectural styles, including mid-century modern. Along with awesome homes and home styles, Clifton's waterfront location close to downtown also helps make it one of the city's best places to live.

Like many cities around the U.S., you won't find entire neighborhoods full of mid-century modern architecture, which is exactly what makes it so difficult to find one if it's a style you truly love. Other neighborhoods around town that do feature some classic mid-century homes, however, include San Marco, Lakeshore, San Jose, and even Ortega Forest

Pros & Cons of Buying a Jacksonville Mid-Century Modern Home

Like with any home purchase, there are plenty of things to consider when opting for a mid-century modern residence. While some people see these types of homes as dated, others see the real value in this particular design style, which is truly what makes them so popular even today. One primary advantage to mid-century modern homes is that eventual buyers don’t have to worry about filling up every available space inside the home. By design, mid-century modern homes were meant to have fewer furnishings and decor, and instead focus on clean lines and functionality. Additionally, some people love the idea of letting the outdoors in, and having plenty of natural light flow throughout the entirety of the living space is a real bonus that you just don't get with other more classic architectural styles.

Keep in mind, though, with a true mid-century modern home, you are purchasing an older home. This may mean dealing with some decade’s old problems, such as electrical issues or water damage. Any home that’s not well maintained will eventually fall into disrepair, and with any older home, you may also find that multiple families have lived in it over the years, and potentially made a lot of renovations or made some additions that may not necessarily work well together. It's also possible, and sometimes common, that when a home hasn't been taken care of over the years, it may not be up to modern code. Additionally, some dated mid-century modern homes may need to have the windows replaced to help with cooling and heating. But if you can find a mid-century modern that’s still in great shape, or you’re willing to put in some work, buyers are more often than not rewarded in the end.
